Simone in Morocco: Mummy & Daddy

Moroccan parents are hard core.

I mean truly. Calling your son and daughter every single day?

Safaa: That's nothing Simone. Mine has UNLIMITED calls. She's on the phone at least FIVE times a day.
Me: So stop taking her calls.
Safaa: Ha! Then they start calling university staff. University lecturers!
Me: No one calls me.
3 Students in Unison: That's because you don't speak Arabic!!!

Safaa's parents are not unusual. Three calls a day does seem to be the norm, although some students (mostly male) "only" call every two or three days, and the calls drop off a bit after...

...two or three years.

So when I show my classes an a video advertising Leicester University and its pastoral care, in which two parents discuss their worry that a son might not call them in two weeks, they stare at me gob-smacked...

...And get stuck into their video projects which show you more about them, their wonderful parents, and Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, than I could ever attempt to describe.

For the record, as Rime explained in a HUGE panic. That is SALT. And the bottles were UNOPENED. It was a religious holiday and the bar owner... was very kind. It could not be uploaded onto YouTube because of the word 'Cocaine' in the clip.

Moroccan censorship in action people, people. Yeah, I was shocked. The students? Blase.

But Moroccan parents must be doing something right to produce such generous, giving, curious, interesting people.

Thank you so much for all you gave me. Your time. Your talents. Your tolerance. I feel like Ifrane is a gift your gave me that I will carry around forever:
